English, Circa 1900.

A magnificent inlaid mahogany Carlton House writing desk, offered in superb showroom condition.

This form of desk is said to have been designed in the 18th century for the Prince of Wales (who later became George IV) by George Hepplewhite. It is named after Carlton House, which was at the time the London residence of the Prince, and sometimes is also known as a Carlton House writing table.

A very high quality piece, featuring the a high grade figured mahogany with beautiful grain and colour with contrasting ebony inlay.

The U shape superstructure has a brass gallery top with 12 drawers and 2 curved cubby hole doors. The drawers all pull smoothly with brass handles and feature ebonised cockbeaded fronts.
Sitting on a table with new leather inset writing surface and tooled edging, this high quality leather hide has been hand dyed using traditional technique to create a unique burnt amber colour which works well with the rich mahogany timber.

There are a further 3 drawers along the desk front, with matching ebonised cockbeading and original Hobbs & Co. locks.
The drawers are of solid mahogany dovetailed construction and offer a great amount of storage.

Finished all round, so this can be freestanding in the room.

The desk comes in 2 pieces for transport, allowing careful placement in the home.

On tampering square legs with ebony inlaid detail, and terminating at brass cup casters.

A truly magnificent desk that will be the talking piece of any home or office.
